“Echo”
…”Wait a minute,” she said raising herself from the car seat where she’d been sleeping, as she has always done on our rides home.
“You’re not lost! I recognize this part of the road, we’re half way home!”
“That’s the problem sweetheart, this is the fourth time I’ve recognized this part of the road tonight!”
“Hugh?”
“Yea, that’s what I mean! I can’t explain it, but about every five minutes I’m back at the same place of the road!”
“What are you talking about?”
“I don’t know!” I felt the sweat from my hands making the steering wheel slip from my grip.
“Are you O.K.,” she said.
“No, I think I am going crazy; I can’t explain what’s going on, but I’m serious!”
I looked at my watch and noticed we’ve been driving for close to forty minutes, and we’re not home yet!”
O.K., tell me again, slowly?” …
“A Mystic Evening”
…As the lightning flashed, and the thunder roared, we fell to the floor. The wind blew fierce against the glass panes. With a sudden gust, the wind consumed the candle flame in an instant. There was darkness.
The sound of the powerful surf, thrusting itself against the rocks, outside our window, made our passions rise. We loved one another.
The wind blew with terrifying furry. The rain rhythmically beat upon the roof. The lightning flashed while the thunder crashed, again, and again. Our senses were assaulted. The warmth we felt in each other’s arms, our passion unleashed, the pounding surf, the driving rain, the lightning, and the thunder, all coming to a climax simultaneously! With a final explosion of thunder, we collapsed in one another’s arms…
“New Oldies”
…I stood motionless and watched my home through the now dim twilight. I could see someone sitting in a lawn chair on our patio listening to the radio. I couldn’t make out who it was. I did remember that this was my favorite pastime of the summer. I would just sit and listen to the top 40 on the patio and watch the kids ride their bikes, jump rope, and watch the cars and people’s lives go by, and watch the sun set as the sky turned from blue, to orange, to indigo, and eventually to the black of night. I would feel the tickle of the breeze, and watch the fireflies light up the night sky, first here, then there, then over there.
It was then that I realized that it was me sitting over there in that chair, doing what I enjoyed and remembered so vividly. It was actually me!…
“The Same, Only Different”
…I check the closet to be sure that all of my close were still there. They were, but not the same two suites I brought with me. There wasn’t a shirt I recognized either. My wallet? What about it? I ran to open my wallet. It was the same. I was who I was, and everything was in order. What about my passport? I went to the dresser drawer where I hid it under the Gideon Bible, and it was also the same, the same picture, the same address, but…? It seems that I had been to England a year earlier. How terrific. I have no recollection of being in England, but why not?…
“Is It Really Important”
…As the figure and I came closer together, a warm but upsetting feeling came over me as I recognized who it was. It was Joe. My first friend, I guess my oldest friend. That explained the warm comfortable feeling I had. He died about three weeks ago. That was the real upsetting part.
It’s one of those mixed emotions, situations. I was so glad to see him and talk about the whys and the how comes, but if this was truly him, it meant that I was in more trouble than I had previously imagined.
He asked that we not talk for a little while, and that I walk with him for a short distance. I felt the best thing I could do at that time was to do just that. We walked for a few minutes; all the time I was thinking about the last time we talked…
“The Swath”
…The Eldest understood the passion the Young One had for this Special Forest, much like his own when he was young, and interrupted, “It is true, the Special Forest, according to legend is a beautiful place filled with everything your heart could desire, but the journey is dangerous, and you can never return, not ever!”
As the Eldest concluded his sentence, he raised his right arm from out of the darkness of the hollow tree into the light of the moon. The young one was surprised to see the Eldest had lost his paw.
The Eldest spoke quietly and slowly, “This is the result of many years ago, when I tried to learn about the Special Forest for myself. A large and dangerous beast protects the Special Forest. This creature has received all that have tried to enter this place. None has returned, but myself, with this to show for it…
“The Future”
…I was overwhelmed with excitement. It blurred as I turned my head, and was difficult to remain focused on. But, I saw enough to know that it was real. We live each day with the future; it surrounds us just as the present does. Feel the present now? It’s ever changing, but always with us. Same too, the future.
As I view this new scene, all that was around me entered my head as though I had always known what I was seeing, only now I was able to remember it. Can you recall the last time you tried in vain to remember that certain someone’s name, or the title of that song or movie, when all of a sudden, something flashes, and it’s right there, you knew it all of the time. It was only obscured…

Excerpts…
The Rescue Of Betsy Ross”
…It seemed that circumstantial evidence was condemning Betsy to obscurity. At this very moment I had another flash of memory. This time back to a rainy day when I was twelve. I received a Readers Digest book of things to do on a raining day and seeing it appropriate, I took the book from my shelf and began performing some simple crafts and other time consuming suggestions, such as the growing palm tree from newspaper, play dough from flour and water, and, how to cut a perfect 5 pointed star from a single piece of paper with a few folds and a single cut.
I then interrupted Sibley mid-sentence and asked him that; “If I could show you that you could cut a 5 pointed star more easily that a 6, could that be considered substantial enough circumstantial evidence to save Betsy’s place in history?” He silently thought for a few moments and asked me to continue…
“The First Black Landowner”
…Wait a minute I exclaimed; meet you in the graveyard tonight after dark. I don’t think so. He assured me that this was the only way to gather the badly needed information. I trusted Carl, so I agreed to his odd request.
Later that evening, the air was cool, the ground was damp, and the moon was an eerie crescent playing-hide-and-seek behind the November clouds. When I arrived at the parking, Carl had already been there waiting for me. I motioned him to follow me through the woods, around the swamp, into ultimately into the forgotten graveyard.
Navigating your way through a dense, overgrown forest of stickers and vines in the light of day is one thing, but trying it in the absolute darkness is still another…
“The Secret Of The Lost Dutchman Gold Mine”
…This was it. Unquestionably. The Apache Thunder God! I motioned for him to turn around. I was frantic. Look, look, I yelled. He couldn’t hear me from this distance. I was persistent. He finally turned, looked, and began jumping up and down. That’s it!
We met back at the truck and put it into four-wheel drive and headed for that hill. We drove as far as the truck could take us. We got out and hiked the rest of the way on foot. This really was it. It was unmistakable.
When we reached the top of the hill overlooking the Thunder God, we found what we later identified as a 1,000 year old, Indian settlement of the Hohokam tribe that vanished from Arizona nearly 800 years ago. It was 20 or so stone foundations of rooms they presumably used in religious ceremonies celebrating the Thunder God. The settlement and Thunder God has since become a historic landmark. From this view, we could see the Military Trail along the Verde River. The Military Trail. We hit pay dirt!…
“Journey”
…The inertia of the waves beneath me as they pound against the protective hull; the yawing of my ship as the wind beats against the cloth sails; the rudder being pulled from my strained hand; these sights and sounds are that of the inevitable destruction of my world.
The snapping of the taut sails in the wind are as a great pine crashing to the fern covered floor below.
I feel the cold spray of salt water as liquid mountains hurdle themselves at my bow and with the feeling of each impact; I sense the bitter taste in my mouth of salt and fear. The reality of the shore seems a millennium away…
“Stonehenge”
…As that flash of orange / pink light shot across the grassy meadow, it was interrupted by something to my right. It was something large and cold and geometric. It was the stones of Stonehenge. The textures of the huge granite monoliths became apparent. It was nearly breath taking. It was me, a thousand sheep in the meadow, Stonehenge and the first crack of morning.
The sun was rising fast enough to actually see the shadows move across the meadow. The dark outlines of the sheep became shorter and shorter as the sun rose on its azimuth. The color of the grasslands began to appear; the sheep were off-white with black faces that were all staring at me. The granite became grey with the hand-hewn indentations and imperfections accentuated by the severe angle of the sunlight…
“The Sweat”
…After many hours of driving, I arrived at the freeway exit along the famous and historic Route 66. I turned north out into the desolation of what is the Navajo / Hopi Res. The Navajo Res is situated southwest of the Four Corners. The Four Corners being the only place in the 50 United States where four states touch, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. It is also the place where the Bubonic Plague or Black Death has resurfaced along with the always fatal, Hampa Virus.
If God was to allow the resurrection of such demons, this is where he would choose. The landscape in the early morning sun was surrealistic. The dry, high step dessert appeared nearly devoid of any life. The most astonishing features of the landscape were its many, now extinct volcanoes. Strange individual mountains springing up from the dessert floor in one of two science fiction colors, a fiery brick red, or a black as dark as pitch, both colors representative of hell itself…
“El Nino Sank The Titanic”
…Dateline: March 6, 1998, San Diego, California — Amateur meteorologist, Lon S. Safko announced today, he my have discovered what he believes to be evidence linking the reoccurring weather event known as El Nino and the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic, on April 14, 1912, which resulted in the loss of more than 1,500 lives. The two biggest phenomenon’s of the 1997/1998 winter season collided today in what can be described as astonishing, El Nino and the Titanic. The 1998 El Nino, which recently has been associated with severe storms and damage along the west coast of the United States and Mexico has been blamed for everything from beach erosion, to power outages, from disruption in telecommunications to air traffic delays, now has an additional legacy, the sinking of the Titanic…
